Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders
Set in the cemetery where Abraham Lincoln’s son Willie is buried, this experimental novel gives voice to the inhabitants who reside there. The ghosts of the cemetery reside in Bardo, a Tibetan Buddhist name for the transition period between death and rebirth—a purgatory for these souls to reside and converse. Reminiscent of Edgar Lee Masters “Spoon River Anthology” and Sherwood Anderson’s “Winesburg, Ohio.” Saunders won the 2017 Man Booker Prize for Fiction for this novel.
